Framed Print of Queen Mary At Bedford College -- Her Majesty Queen Mary is guided by Miss G

Queen Mary At Bedford College -- Her Majesty Queen Mary is guided by Miss G.E.M. Jebb, M.A. during her visit to Bedford college for Women, London of which Queen Mary is patroness, today May 19. Miss Jebb is principal at the college which today celebrated its centenary. It is the oldest women's college in England. It was founded in 1849 by Elisabeth Reid, wife of a London Doctor, and the original buildings were in Bedford Square. In 1913, the college moved to Regents Park, and Queen Mary opened the present College Buildings on July 4 of that year. During the war, when the college was evacuated to Cambridge, about one third of the building was destroyed in an air raid. It is hoped that a rebuilding programme will be complete in 1952. At the beginning of the present session 837 students were in attendance. One hundred years ago 68 pupils enrolled for the opening term of the first women's college. June 22, 1949.
